Congratulations on your pregnancy!! You are embarking on a journey that is both exciting and sometimes a little scary. We would be delighted to walk alongside you as your Lead Maternity Caregivers (LMC's) during this very special time, and we look forward to welcoming you to the "Midwives 4 U" family.

At Midwives 4 U we are experienced Registered Midwives with many years of experience between us; offering FREE maternity care for the women of Rotorua and surrounding districts. If you are a New Zealand Citizen, Resident or currently on a 2 year work visa, then we can offer you maternity care for FREE. We are all current members of the New Zealand College of Midwives and hold up to date and current Annual Practising Certificates (APC's issued by the New Zealand Midwifery Council).

Our practice is women centered and family focused. We believe it is important to have your family / whanau supporting you and are happy to work alongside the people you consider important to you and your baby. We work in a reciprocal partnership that ensures all the women in our care have a safe and competent midwife they can contact 24/7 for emergencies. (This means you have more than one midwife committed to your pregnancy! ). We provide midwifery care from your booking visit throughout your pregnancy, labour,  birth and up until 6 weeks postpartum (afterbirth). You will have plenty of opportunities to meet your Back Up Midwife throughout your pregnancy as we work closely together.

At Midwives 4 U we believe that pregnancy and childbirth are normal and healthy life events. We are firm believers that this is YOUR pregnancy - it isn't ours. We are here to support you, help you and give you all the relevant, vital and necessary information that you require to make good informed choices in YOUR pregnancy.  All information and cares provided by us is given in an easy going, fun and straight forward manner.

Our LMC Midwives normal working hours are Monday - Friday 8:30-5:00pm. However an LMC midwife is on call for her clients 24/7 ( 24 hours a day 7 days a week) for labours births and emergency situations.

As midwives we monitor you throughout your pregnancy monitoring the health and well being of not only your unborn baby, but you as well. This monitoring at each visit covers not only changes to your physical well being and safety, but will also cover your emotional well being and safety. During your pregnancy you will see us in our antenatal clinic's. At the beginning of your pregnancy you will be seen on a monthly basis until 28 weeks gestation from 28/40 you will be seen fortnightly until 36 weeks, then weekly until the birth of your baby. Remember a normal pregnancy is from 37-42 weeks gestation. At each visit we will check your blood pressure (BP), monitor for weight gain or loss, discuss any test results and or up coming testing requirements, Palpate and measure your abdomen (from an appropriate gestation), feeling for size of the uterus and baby, and of course which way your baby is lying within your abdomen, We will also listen for your baby's heartbeat from 12 weeks gestation as your baby's heart can be heard on doppler at this stage. We will also discuss how each month has been for you, and what is upcoming over the next period until your next appointment. Your next appointment time will be arranged with you at each visit, so you will know ahead of time when you are seeing us again. From 23 weeks gestation you will be asked to under take a urinalysis test at each visit. This urine test measures protein and glucose spillage in your urine, and can sometimes be the first indicator that changes are happening with your body that may require closer monitoring.

Your midwife will require regular time off call to recoup after busy weeks and spend time with her family. Most New Zealanders have a weekend off every week, LMC Midwives do not have that opportunity. There may be a time when you call your LMC and your back up midwife will provide cares for you, as your midwife maybe sleeping after a long birth, delivering a new baby, or on some time off. We ensure that you will meet your back up midwife regularly throughout your pregnancy.

Although we all hope everything goes smoothly for you during your pregnancy, as midwives we work within the "primary or normal" scope of practice. Sometimes further input is needed by secondary services. If complications were to arise in your pregnancy, then we would have no hesitation in referring you FREE of charge with your consent, to the Obstetric Team at Rotorua Birthing Unit- We all have good solid working relationships with this amazing team.

Clinic visits are by appointment only, and we look forward to sharing this special and amazing time with you and your family / whanau while welcoming you to ours.
